Business Overview

Jill’s House was founded by Lon and Brenda Solomon in 2010 after they experienced the need for respite firsthand while caring for their daughter Jill, who has a severe seizure disorder. Church members from McLean Bible Church in McLean, Va. offered the gift of overnight respite at a time when the Solomon family desperately needed it. Knowing there must be thousands of other families in need of support and rest, the vision for Jill’s House was born.

While the idea for Jill’s House was originally planted and supported at McLean Bible Church in McLean, Va., the organization has grown into a separate not-for-profit organization. Led by President and Chief Executive Officer Cameron Doolittle, Jill’s House was created and is maintained through individual donations and foundation grants and receives no direct state or federal funding.

Scheduling Overview

We started with 6 volunteers and now we have 72. Our current scheduling challenges relate to our unusual operating hours and the availability of a largely part-time staff.

Previous Scheduling Method

Prior to the work scheduler Humanity we were scheduling in an excel spreadsheet and emailing the information out. This became an arduous process as our staff grew tremendously and our schedule expanded greatly, moving from 2 nights a week to a 24/7 operation. Tracking availability, shift preferences, etc. became an impossible task, particularly as our shift-working staff has grown to nearly 50 employees.

Since Humanity

The work scheduler Humanity has dramatically reduced the time required to generate a schedule for the month. It has also given the flexibility to allow staff members to access the schedule at any time, from anywhere. Finally, it has created accountability, as there’s no excuse for missing a shift since the notification features will remind staff of their upcoming shifts.

We would absolutely recommend Humanity to others. The work scheduler has been a great benefit to Jill’s House, reducing the number of hours spent slaving over a spreadsheet and minimizing the stress of communicating the schedule (and schedule changes) to the entire staff. It’s helped ensure the smooth operation of the primary function of our organization.
