Established in 1988, Community Health serves as the public health division of the Wardenburg Health Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder. They help students develop necessary skills to make informed choices about health and well-being both at school and beyond is priceless. Three years ago, they began the process of integrating three small departments with specific focuses into one single department with a comprehensive public health mission to educate students about health issues that have an impact on persistence and completion in school. This integration process has been challenging, particularly because it requires more cooperation and communication among workers. The work flow has become exponentially more complex now that they are working with several small departments and juggle the schedules of staff of varying commitment levels.
Despite expanding from a single employee to thirty employees, comprised of student employees, professional staff, interns and volunteers, Community Health has made an effort to maintain staff involvement and input. Juggling changing student schedules that change each semester, have breaks, midterms and last minute deadlines, is always a challenge. Keeping track of staff schedules, classes, workshops, meetings and impending tasks was difficult and overwhelming, particularly when using pen and paper based scheduling. On top of that, Community Health’s work entails providing presentations and other health related activities to a 30,000 person campus. Catering to students of the University of Colorado, Community Health are forced to manage a very variable and dynamic staff schedule between different classrooms, presentation areas and student groups. Humanity’s software allows management to create different staff positions for more coordinated and organized schedules while also allowing the users to use remote site locations in their shift schedules. This helps organizations like Community Health who need to schedule shifts and events outside of their primary locations.
Since Community Health switched to Humanity, they have seen significant improvements across the board, including their time efficiency. Acknowledging the very constrained fiscal environment that they work in, the staff at Community Health have improved their scheduling system by leaps and bounds, saving them valuable time. Student workers can log in to their personal Humanity accounts and check their schedules from anywhere, at any time, which is essential. Communication, which is especially important in organizations with busy staff, has improved incredibly and all staff now have the ability to respond to presentation requests, shift changes and more.
