Here at Humanity, we realize that not all businesses function in the exact same way.
For example, some business might not pay workers by the hour, but by the task. On the other hand, there are surely businesses that use both methods for determining how much their employees worked and earned.
For those types of businesses, Humanity is proud to introduce its very flexible and customizable Work Units feature.
Using this feature, managers and schedules can assign tasks to positions, either by shift or by day, and determine how much employees will earn for completing these tasks.
Enabling the Feature
To start using the feature, head over to your Admin panel and then click on Account Settings.
Scroll down to the bottom of your Schedule Settings to find the option “Enable work units module.”
Once this option has been enabled, you will see three additional settings, both of which are optional and fairly self-explanatory:
- Enable employees to add work units
- Work Units submitted by scheduler are auto approved
- Employees can see own Work Unit Reports
Once you have saved the changes, make sure that you refresh the page so that the changes can take effect.
Now that you have enabled the feature, you are ready to starting using it!
Click on Admin >> Payroll >> Manage Work Units to access the feature.
Here you will see the form that needs to be filled out in order to create a new Work Unit. Enter a descriptive name to define the Work Unit, a pay per rate and assign a position for the Work Unit.
It is important to note that you need to assign a position to each Work Unit before assigning it to an employee. Each Work Unit needs to be linked to at least one position.
On the left side of the page, you will see a list of existing Work Units once you have created several. You can add, edit and delete work units easily from the list whenever you need to.
Assigning Work Units
There are two ways that you can go about assigning work units.
Assign By Shift
One way to do this is through the Schedule and employee shifts. Click on a employee shift and then find the “puzzle” icon in the right corner. That’s the Work Unit icon.
It’s important to remember that you cannot assign a Work Unit to an employee unless they are first assigned to that shift.
Now click on the name of the employee to whom you want to assign Work Units. Now you can input how many Work Units that employee has worked and how many they are required to work.
The “Required” field is for your purposes only. Managers and schedulers will see this data in their work unit reports, but employees will not.
If the setting “Enable employees to add Work Units” is enabled, then each employee will be able to add a Work Units to their shifts on their own by clicking on a shift and then on the Work Unit icon.
If you did not enable the setting for the auto-approval of Work Units created by employees, then managers and schedulers will get Work Unit approval requests.
You can see them by clicking on the Requests tab.
Here you can decide whether you want to approve or reject Work Units submitted by employees.
Assign by Date
This is the second way to assign Work Units. You don’t have to assign them by shifts, you can assign them by dates as well.
From the Requests tab, click on Manage Work Units. Here you can create work units by date.
At the bottom of this page, you will see your reports. This is where you can keep track of all of the Work Units you and your employees assigned and all pertinent data related to them.
As you can see, it’s a very robust feature that really increase the number of options you have when it comes to scheduling and assigning tasks for your employees and payinmg them accordingly for the work they have done.
